Summers Place Auctions’ combined Garden Statuary and Natural History Autumn sale took place in Billingshurst, West Sussex on Tuesday, 21st October 2014 and saw contemporary sculpture doing particularly well.

Among the more traditional lots, a rare Coadestone armorial for the Founders Company, stamped “Coade and Sealy, Lambeth, 1800” sold for £7,500. It was most probably removed from the facade of the Founders Hall in London, and we are pleased to announce that it has been bought by the Founders Company to return to their London hall.

STOP PRESS – AUCTION RESULTS:-

Gavin Gardiner Ltd’s first auction of 2013 of Fine Modern and Vintage Sporting Guns and Rifles saw a historically and internationally significant rare “Russian Purdey”, that was presented to British Prime Minister Harold Macmillan by Russian President Nikita Krushchev on the occasion of MacMillan’s Historic 1959 State Visit to Russia – one of the key points in the Cold War – sell for £21,600 to a collector, who was bidding on the telephone. The auction took place on Wednesday, April 17, 2013 at Sotheby’s, 34-35 New Bond Street, London. Remaining in a new unfired condition and with presentation inscription in a gold plaque, the 12-bore gun was made to Purdey specifications by the Tula State Armoury and carried an estimate of £20,000 and £30,000.

Aside from its blockbuster, coffer-filling exhibitions, the RA often offers little stocking-filler exhibitions – usually small, low-budget, bijou shows, drawn from their own collection.

Now that the surprisingly successful Bronzes exhibition has finished and before they open their next big blockbuster, Manet’s Portraits (26 January – 14 April), they have a charming, if slightly academic, exhibition in the opulently gilded John Madekski Rooms and two adjacent rooms. All the works come from the RA’s own collection, though they have never been shown together and many are little known.
