Our intrepid Doctor, Bruce Dunlop has been on his travels again – this time in search of the ultimate fishing experience in Lesotho:-

It is the elephant in the room.  Huge, high and imposing but few people seem to now it is there.  Even in South Africa very few have noticed Lesotho.

Some facts.  It sits in the middle of the Republic of South Africa, an independent kingdom and proud of its monarch.  It is high.  The entire country is above 1000m in altitude and as a consequence is quite cool, you can even ski after a fashion in the Maloti Mountains.  Its population is about 2 million and although there is some mining for diamonds and a little industry the majority of the population lives on subsistence farming, pastoral pursuits and remittances from family members working in South Africa.

I was recently lucky enough to be invited to a Fly-Fishing day as a guest of Orvis, who have a wonderful beat on the River Test at Kimbridge.  So, on 1st October, the first day of the pheasant shooting season, I duly arrived at the appointed hour, to find a happy group of fellow guests and some very helpful staff from Orvis, whose primary concern was to give us an enjoyable day’s fishing on one of the best beats on the Test.

History of the House and The Historic Grounds

The first stone was laid at Endsleigh in 1810 by Georgiana, Duchess of Bedford and her three eldest stepsons.  The land had come to the Russell family on the dissolution of the monasteries; it had previously been church land, owned by Tavistock Abbey and was given by the King ‘for services rendered’.

LAKSELVA, NORWAY – UNQUESTIONABLY THE BIG FISH RIVER OF THE MOMENT

The Lakselva river is now one of the most reliable rivers in the world when it comes to producing salmon of over 40lbs.  We have been fishing the river over the past six seasons and in almost every week we have been there, one or more of our guests has landed a fish of over 40lbs – this simply cannot be said of other rivers, even on the Kola.

We have four rods remaining in our very popular hosted weeks where you will fish the three well-regulated ticketed zones.  Norway has a reputation for over-rodding rivers and whilst this is not exclusive water, the Lakselva river board have very sensibly and sensitively managed the number of rods on the beats and it never feels over crowded.

This is for those who want to land the fish of a lifetime without breaking the bank.  Please contact James Dent, Charlie White or Christopher Robinson for further details.

AROY, NORWAY – YOUR OWN PRIVATE RIVER

We are very excited to be able to offer the iconic Aroy river in Norway.  When we say we can “offer the river”, we mean it.  This most famous of Norwegian rivers fishes only four rods and is owned exclusively, meaning double bank fishing along its length and with a lodge that you fill with your own private party.

The river was memorably recalled in Charles Ritz’s book “A Fly Fisher’s Life” where he described it as one of the most enthralling rivers he had ever fished.  It has not been let to anyone outside of the immediate family for 50 years and we are delighted to be able to provide the rare opportunity to take your own river, either for a week or just three days and experience Norwegian fishing as our forefathers did.  Please contact Christopher Robinson, Charlie White or Hannah Treliving for further details.

VARZUGA – VERY FEW RODS REMAINING

2012 was a phenomenal season on the Varzuga, we landed over 8,500 fresh salmon in our short six week season – an average of just under 50 fish per rod per week, a figure unmatched anywhere else in the world.  Unsurprisingly demand has been very strong for 2013 and we now only have a few rods left at the Middle Varzuga Camp, the most productive camp of all.

There are four rods available in the peak weeks and we are also running a June week at Middle Camp, priced at £3,500 including air charter from Helsinki, for those who wish to fish the best that the Kola has to offer at a highly advantageous price.  Please contact Charlie White, Lynsey Mair or Christopher Robinson for further details.

ICELAND – A TRICKY SEASON IN 2012 BUT DEMAND FOR THE BEST REMAINS HIGH

2012 will not go down as one of Iceland’s best seasons.  Low water at the beginning of the year appeared to be to blame but, even when the rains came, the number of salmon that we have become used to simply did not materialise.  There were exceptions to the rule and whilst numbers were down across the board, some rivers still produced very respectable returns.

The East and West Ranga were two of these and their catch statistics, superb guides, comfortable lodges and the fact that they are close enough to Reykjavik to allow for a three day trip means that they remain in high demand.  If you seek high volume salmon fishing but are unable to spare a whole week from work or family commitments then do take a closer look at these rivers.  Please contact Louise Mackenny or Charlie White for further details.

Roxtons Press Release in November 2012

In June, 2000, I was lucky enough to be taken, as a guest of my old friend, Michael Jackson, on a fishing trip to Russia, to celebrate his 50th birthday, which was all extremely well-organised by Roxtons, the Sporting Agency, founded by Christopher Orssich, who was the first to offer trips to the Varzuga river.

We flew to Helsinki, then to Murmansk, where having cleared a very officious Customs regime, we were decanted into three vintage ex-military Russian helicopters and flown across arctic tundra for several hours, to a remote fishing camp on the Varzuga River on the Kola Peninsula, where the salmon run wild and plentiful. Who's A Clever Boy

Whisper it quietly but this might just be some of the best back end fishing on the River Test in a generation. After a year that started with a drought, followed by one of the wettest summers on record the two extremes have counter balanced to create perfect river conditions.

Chalkstreams like the River Test are tough beasts; in the millions of years since the river valleys were carved out by the ice age they have been subjected to just about every possible variation of climate but every time they bounce back with the gin-clear flows that we crave for dry fly trout fishing.
